PLAYING WITH THE ENEMY: A Baseball Prodigy, a World at War, and a Field of Broken Dreams hits home run at Book Expo America

Gary W. Moore’s extraordinary book captures the heart of every red-blooded American who ever dreamed of making it to “The Show”

PHOENIX—Gary W. Moore’s “rookie” appearance at the largest book fair in the U.S., Book Expo America, was a home run for the author and his book PLAYING WITH THE ENEMY: A Baseball Prodigy, a World at War, and a Field of Broken Dreams.  More than 220 booksellers,  librarians, and other industry professionals—many holding PWTE baseball business cards—waited patiently in line Sunday (May 21st) to get a copy of the book while Moore’s publisher, Theodore P. Savas, personally greeted those in line. Moore signed an additional 40 books at the Casemate Publishing booth later Sunday. Bob Newhart, another “freshman” author, was the only one to draw a larger crowd (250) to his formal signing. Among the famous who received copies of the book were William J. “Bill” Bennett, statesman and author; Jim Belushi, actor/author; and Chicken Soup authors Mark Victor Hansen and Jack Canfield.

PLAYING WITH THE ENEMY (PWTE) is the riveting story of one depression-era youth and his brush with destiny. PWTE is a poignant look back at the life of Moore’s father, Gene, a 15-year old baseball phenomenon, headed for stardom when he was drafted by the Brooklyn Dodgers. Gene’s destiny was interrupted by the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor. PLAYING WITH THE ENEMY is baseball tragedy turned real-life triumph. The book is published by Savas Beatie LLC, an independent publisher of distinguished history-related books based in New York and California. PLAYING WITH THE ENEMY is the real-life story of Moore’s father, Warren E. ‘Gene’ Moore. Gene was recruited by the Brooklyn Dodgers in 1940 at fifteen years old, but his baseball dream was cut short when the United States entered WWII. “Moore’s saga is a heartwarming story of a baseball tragedy turned real-life triumph,” Marilee McInnis, Southwest Airlines, stated.

Southwest Airlines was so impressed with PLAYING WITH THE ENEMY that they agreed to sponsor Moore’s book tour, which begins September 15th in Chicago.

“Gary Moore’s touching book about his father’s baseball career, serves as a reminder that life is all about second chances and people inspiring each other to chase their dreams. . . . I loved Playing with the Enemy. You will, too.” --Baseball legend Jim Morris, former pitcher for the Tampa Bay Devil Rays

"A baseball passion play in everybody's wheelhouse. A small town American dream turned into a persecution only to be rescued by a woman working through heartache herself."—Bob McNamara
Veteran CBS News Correspondent

“When we consider the amazing achievement of what has come to be known as "the Greatest Generation," it's easy to forget that they were individual flesh and blood human beings, young people whose dreams were interrupted by the need to save the world. ‘Playing with the Enemy’ is the compelling story of one such young American, an astoundingly gifted athlete who found himself fighting a war when he would have preferred to have been battling opposing players on the baseball diamond. Amusing at times, sad at others, but always heartwarming, it is a uniquely American and personal story of one man, one of many who sacrificed so much for our freedom.”—Teri O’Brien,
WLS 890 AM - Chicago

Gary Moore’s freshman book tour will include co-op events with Southwest Airlines, Major League Baseball, benefits for Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation, and other events still pending.

Jammed with memorable characters from an extraordinary time in our country’s history, PLAYING WITH THE ENEMY: A Baseball Prodigy, a World at War, and a Field of Broken Dreams is a story that will be read and reread for generations to come.
